The Gallery: Nature

Published by misscherryred at 6:30 pm under The Gallery

This post is for The Gallery, Week 21 over at Sticky Fingers.

*********************

When I hit 13 my Mum and Dad moved us to Northern Ireland.

I had no friends.

Catholic kids hated me because I was english.  Protestant kids hated because I was catholic.

I felt totally isolated.

I hated Ireland and to make things feel worse – it was cold and rained at least 200 days of the year.

And then I went to college and met some wonderful people who lived in Portstewart.

Portstewart is a small coastal town on the north east coast of Northern Ireland.

I found somewhere I could be where my religion or my nationality wasn’t important.

I could sit on the beach and watch the clouds roll out to see.

I could forget all the shit for for as long as I wanted.

I could hear only my thoughts.

It remains one of my favourite places ever.

That is a gorgeous photo. I’m so glad you found a part of Ireland that you can love. We lived in Dublin for a year and I love the place (although I totally get the hated-because-you’re-english thing). Great post :)

I loved reading this. I married a norn iron man who is neither protestant or catholic just lovely. We go to Portstewart whenever we’re back ‘home’ and have fish and chips in the car, normally cause it’s raining. But I’m Scottish, I’m used to it. Lovely photo and I’m glad that you found some nice people there!

    Thank you!

I used to watch the clouds roll out to sea taking all my woes with it….

When I was young my family used to spend our Sundays at the lake racing sail boats. I used to love sitting down by the dock looking across the water. It was so quiet and so peaceful, I could pretend I was in another world.

Your photo has taken me right back there, it’s really gorgeous.
I’m glad you found a place like that too.

I knew as soon as I saw this pic (before I’d read anything) that this was N.Ireland! Portstewart is so lovely. I’m from Bangor, Co.Down but live over in NW Eng now!
